KRFC v Cambuslang
Last Saturday, Kilmarnock returned to winning ways with a big win away to Cambuslang.
On the back of a run of two consecutive defeats, Killie started the game showing signs of the side that started the season on a strong unbeaten run. The visitors dominated and took a 38-0 lead into the break.
The dominance continued into the second half and, despite conceding a try, Killie ran out comfortable 69-5 winners.
Kilmarnock started quickly from kick-off, winning an early scrum. They worked the ball out wide on the left side and William Farquhar got the first try. Robert Paxton’s conversion was good and Killie lead 7-0 early.
Kilmarnock’s dominance continued, with most of the play in the Cambuslang half. They won a couple of scrums and penalties as Killie continued to apply pressure on their hosts.
It didn’t take long for Killie to add to their lead. Calum Smith managed to get the ball down on the line after multiple tackles from the home side to extended Kilmarnock’s lead. The conversion was wide.
Quickly afterwards, Killie got another try. They broke through at pace and Connor Turnbull made it 17-0. The conversion was good to make it 19-0.
Kilmarnock continued to dominate and got their reward with another try. Following a tackle, the ball was worked to William Farquhar to add to Killie’s lead. Again, Robert Paxton’s conversion was good to make it 26-0.
The lead was extended soon after as Taylor McHarg broke through and got a try, making it 31-0. The conversion was good, and Killie took a 33-0 lead.
After more pressure from Kilmarnock, with the visitors getting multiple penalties and scrums, debutant Kris Kirk got his first try to extend the lead. The conversion was wide, and Killie took a 38-0 lead into the break.
Killie started the second half strongly, winning a scrum on halfway from the kick off. Within ten minutes of the kick off, Calum Smith added another try. The conversion was wide with the score staying at 43-0.
The tries kept coming in the half. Calum Smith extended Killie’s lead further. Substitute Thomas Dunlop’s conversion was good to make it 50-0. Thomas Dunlop broke through soon after to make it 55-0. However, his conversion was wide.
For the first time in the game, Cambuslang produced a meaningful attack. The pushed through and got themselves on the scoresheet. Their conversion was wide, reducing the deficit to 55-5.
Kilmarnock quickly responded. The ball was worked to Robbie Colman who raced through and added to the visitors lead. Thomas Dunlop’s conversion was good to make it 62-5.
Killie continued to dominate the play. Taylor McHarg added to scoring late on after getting beyond the tackles of the home side on the try line. With the last act of the game, Thomas Dunlop converted to make it 69-5.
The post-match huddle saw the players take the knee and Mackenzie Pearce said it was a “good performance” with the players having “good performances across the board.” Stuart Pratt added that was “more like it.” Calum Smith was named Man of the Match.
Kilmarnock host Bishopton on Saturday at Bellsland with a 2pm kick off.
