Kilmarnock U18s travelled down the coast in the glorious sunshine, for their second league game of the season at Newton Stewart.
Kilmarnock kicked off playing into the sun, however didn’t quite travel the full 10 metres, with Newton Stewart awarded a scrum restart.
From the scrum, the home team powered through the Killie defence, and with poor defence at the breakdown, and a missed tackle, crossed the line for an early score.
Maybe it was the long journey down, but the Killie team were a little bit off the pace at the start of the game, and the home side were soon crossing the line again to extend their lead.
The Killie pack were finding it difficult to get a foothold in the game and were being out muscled at the breakdown. Good breaks by Bailey Speir, Frazer Sands and Thomas Dunlop fizzled out through lack of support, much to the frustration of both the coaches and players themselves.
In fairness, Newton Stewart were on top throughout the game, in part due to their forward pack who delivered a level of physicality and Intensity, that the Kilmarnock pack couldn’t match.
They did though score 4 good try’s that would grace any game.
First try through Logan Hendrie, who crashed through the home defence from 5 metres out, following a quick tap and pass from Cullen Urquhart from a penalty.
Second followed good vision from Max Neil, noticing a miss match on the wing, and putting a kick into the corner for Thomas Dunlop to chase. Thomas chased through, competed for the ball in the air, and after ripping ball out of wingers hands touched down in the corner.
Third followed some fine hands across the back line through Max, Frazer and then Thomas who hit the line at pace from inside his own half, took defender on outside shoulder before cutting in on wingers inside shoulder and rounding and outpacing the full back to score under the posts.
Final try was again set up by Max, who after receiving the ball from scrum on home teams 10 meter line, put in a fine chip over the rushing defence, with Thomas running through and outpacing a scrambling back line to touch the ball down.
This was an improvement from last weeks performance, especially around disciple, however still too many unnecessary mistakes been made with are ultimately costing them.
Today’s try scorers were Logan Hendrie and Thomas Dunlop (x3), with Thomas slotting 2/4 conversions
Man of the match was Max Neil.
Thanks to Newton Stewart for their hospitality and we wish them well for the season ahead.
